What is Eczema?
Eczema is a general term for rash-like skin conditions, of may even be called “the itch that rashes”. The most common type of eczema is called atopic dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction. Eczema is often very itchy and when you scratch it, the skin becomes red and inflamed. Most common in babies’, eczema also affects adults and children of all ages. Commonly affected areas of the skin include: face, neck, and the insides of the elbows, knees, and ankles.
Although eczema can’t be cured, some forms of eczema can be triggered by substances that come in contact with the skin, such as soaps, cosmetics, clothing, detergents, jewelry, or sweat. Environmental allergens (substances that cause allergic reactions) may also cause outbreaks of eczema.

What causes Eczema?
Although the exact cause is unknown, eczema is not contagious. You are more likely to have eczema if you have a family history of the condition.

What treatments are available?
The goals for the treatment of eczema is not cure it but to prevent itching, inflammation, and worsening of the condition. Both lifestyle changes and the use of medications are utilized. Of course our doctors will need to personalize treatment based on a patient’s age, health, and severity of the condition.
