Blue Light PhotoDynamic Therapy
We offer Blue Light PhotoDynamic Therapy combined with levulan for treatment of actinic keratoses (pre-cancer), photorejuvenation and acne.

What is photodynamic therapy?
Photodynamic Therapy (Levulan PDT) is an advanced treatment for actinic keratoses (AKs), or rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that can lead to skin cancer. The therapy is a 2-part treatment course, unique because it uses a light activated drug therapy to destroy AKs.

What happens during the procedure?
The two step process begins when the skin is thoroughly cleaned then a 20% topical Levulan Kerastick Solution is applied to the individual AKs. Once the solution is applied you will be directed to wait approximately one hour. During this time the skin will incubate to allow the solution to penetrate the target AK cells. Next you will receive the blue light treatment which lasts approximately 17 minutes.

What can I expect?
The blue light treatment is of low intensity and will not heat the skin. However, during the light treatment you may experience sensations of tingling, stinging, prickling or burning of the treated AKs. These feelings should improve at the end of the light treatment, and completely subside between 1 minute and 24 hours after. Redness, swelling and scaling may occur following the treatment but are temporary and should completely resolve within 4 weeks. Additionally we recommend all blue light therapy patients to avoid excessive sunlight for the first 48 hours after their treatment.
